Pastoral Perspective

"Love one another"--This is the sole command of Jesus to those who follow Him. This is the prime directive of discipleship. There is no evading this commandment to love. A search for an exception is futile. There is no point in trying to construct a set of rules and regulations on this commandment because it is bigger and more encompassing than any set of rules and regulations could ever be. The Christian Way cannot be made into a legal system. It is simply the Way of love.

Expressing the love of the Lord is the work of discipleship. You are to become more and more attune to God's Way of love and participate in it. You are not simply servants but actually friends of the One who shows you what love is. Jesus said, "You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you." (John 15:14, 15)

How do you share this love of your friend, Jesus, with others? I can think of no better way than to consider the elements of a mother's love and to apply them to your works of love.

To begin with, a mother's love is a realization and acceptance of connection, of bonding. A mother doesn't love because she is required to, she loves because she senses such a deep connection she can't help but love. Realize this connection with others in the love of the Lord, accept it, and act on it.

Next, a mother's love makes a commitment to the needs of another and is willing to make sacrifices to help meet those needs. I am so inspired by the way you do that here. When I am told of a difficult situation or circumstance, it is an invitation to join in ministry in the situation. Others have already committed themselves to help in the time of need. This commitment often requires sacrifice.

Finally, a mother's love is working and praying for the best for another while knowing the worst. A mother is steadfast in her love even through difficult stages. You are invited to work for and pray for the best in others even and especially when they are not at their best.

This is what it is all about to "love one another" as Jesus commands it. How could any set of rules and regulations encompass it? It would be like trying to make a manual to show how mothers are to love. This love is just too big to be described in that way.

As you celebrate Mother's Day this month, celebrate the love of a mother. If your mother has shown this love for you, thank God. If your mother hasn't displayed this love for you, pray for her. No matter what, thank God that Jesus has willingly accepted connection with you for now and eternity, that He has made the ultimate sacrifice to provide for your need of salvation, and that he loves you just as you are. Share that love with others and continue to grow in the Way of love.
